One of the many reasons we should pay attention to the foods consumed by us on a daily basis. With the increase of fast food in our fast-paced lifestyle, we have very little time to cook, often looking for shortcuts. We call for home delivery or stop for takeaways on our way back from work. The end results in eating junk food or processed foods that are very low in nutritive value.
At this time, let’s remember our grandmother’s who used to insist on cooking healthy meals in the kitchen, saw to it that the family ate together on the dining table and even feed us with their own hands. How can one forget the dollops of ghee and aromatic Maa ki daal.

Recently at a very Interesting event hosted by Ms. Rushina Ghildiyal at her APB Cook studio, she introduced the Green People and OOO Farms to all those whom she had invited. She wished to host an IFOD (Indian Food Observance Days) Thank you party.
Rushina had stirred up some really innovative recipes using their chemical-free and organic grown produce supporting these two entities. I still couldn’t get enough of the delicious spread that day.

I used Lal Bhat, also known as lal chawal or red rice for my recipe today. It has a nutty flavor along with higher nutritional value. Laal bhaat is unpolished rice, hence its a rich source of iron, zinc, potassium, sodium, manganese, minerals, dietary fiber, good carbohydrates, vitamin B1, B6 and B2, iron and calcium. Because of higher nutritive value, it’s advised for heart patients and diabetics.
However, Laal bhat can be cooked up to create a number of rice-based dishes that blow your mind away. Rice can also be used to make rice flour, flaked rice and puffed rice, for use in sweets like puddings, cakes and as a thickening agent for sauces, soups and stews.
My Spicy Corn Lal bhat recipe
I surprised my family the other day with this recipe. It was spicy yet comforting. Note down the ingredients of this really easy recipe.
- 1 Cup of Lal bhat
- 2 tbsp chili sauce
- 1 cup sweet corn
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 3-4 pods of garlic
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 tsp oil
- 1 tsp black peppercorns
- Juice from one Lemon
- Salt to taste
1. Wash the lal bhat and soak in two cups of water. Double quantity of the rice.
2. Heat the oil in a nonstick wok, add cumin seeds, crushed black peppercorns and garlic. Sauté this on low flame till fragrant.
3. Add the corn kernels, and chili sauce and mix well for another two minutes.
4. Now add the washed rice along with the water, salt and lemon juice.
5. Cover and cook till rice is cooked and all water is absorbed. Press the grain of rice with a finger. If its sticky and soft your rice is done.
6. Remove it in a serving dish and garnish with chili flakes.
7. Serve hot with curd or curry, papad and pickle.
Now isn’t your mouth watering at the thought of this yummy dish being served at your dining table instead of burgers and pizzas.
